Rainband spreading across Australia – here's what to expect this weekend
A low pressure system is causing a massive band of rain to spread across Australia this week, with this wet and windy weather set to continue into the weekend.
A large low pressure system interacting with a stream of tropical moisture caused a large rain band to develop over Australia on Thursday and Friday. The animation below uses enhanced infrared satellite imagery to show a vast area of rain-bearing cloud wrapping into this low pressure system on Friday.

In the 24 hours to 9am on Friday, falls of 10 to 30 mm were recorded over a broad area of SA, southern WA and central Australia. This included 35 mm at Munglinup in WA, 25 mm at Streaky Bay on SA’s West Coast and 24 mm at Uluru. This was more than a month’s worth of rain at this time of year for Uluru and the monolith’s heaviest daily rainfall in 10 months.
The main rainband associated with this system will spread over SA, Vic, western NSW, southwest Qld and parts of the NT and Tas on Friday. It will then continue to move east on Saturday, soaking a broad area of eastern Australia stretching from Tas up to northern Qld.
Showers will also continue to affect SA and southeastern Australia between Friday and Monday in the wake of the initial rainband.
The map below shows the forecast accumulated rain for this Friday to Sunday combined.

In addition to the rain, this large low pressure system will also cause damaging winds in several states on Friday and Saturday, and possibly in a few areas on Sunday. As of 2pm AEST on Friday, severe weather warnings were in place for parts of WA, SA, Qld, NSW, Vic, Tas and the NT.

A separate cold front will also hit WA this weekend, bringing a burst of wind, rain and thunderstorms to western and southwestern parts of the state on Sunday. This front could cause damaging winds and severe storms as it moves over WA this Sunday.
