Mid 20s coming for Melbourne, high 20s for Sydney and Brisbane

Mid 20s coming for Melbourne, high 20s for Sydney and Brisbane

Hands up who hates early spring warmth?

We're guessing not too many of you, which is why residents of Australia's three most populous cities should all enjoy the next few days of weather.

We'll start down south, where Melbourne is expecting tops of 23°C, 20°C and 24°C over the next three days. It won't be quite as warm as last Thursday, when Melbourne reached 26.6, but days will still be very pleasant ahead of a nasty Sunday and Monday, as tops struggle to reach 14°C in the showery wake of a cold front.

Sydney will really turn it on over the next few days. We're talking about maximum temps of 26°C, 25°C, 28°C and 29°C by Sunday, with the chance of the mercury hitting 30°C for the first time since March 8! The chilly showery weather doesn't reach Sydney until the new week.

Meanwhile, Brisbane has been delightful so far in September, with the coolest day reaching 23.7°C and the warmest 26.8°C, but the heat dial is about to turn up up a notch or two, with 29°C, 27°C, 28°C and 29°C in the forecast for the next four days.

And while we're focusing on southeastern Australia and the east coast, we should mention that Canberra won't miss out, with tops of 21°C, 23°C and 18°C tipped for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The capital reached just 12.8°C and 11.2°C last Saturday and Sunday respectively, so this weekend should be a lot nicer.

What's causing the imminent warm spell?

"A high pressure system has been sitting over NSW but is now moving off the east coast and will sit there for a few days, directing warm NW winds across SE Australia," Weatherzone meteorologist Ben Domensino explains.

You can see that illustrated eraly clearly via the orange arrow on the prognostic chart for this Saturday, September 11. Also clearly visible are the cold fronts down south which will usher in significantly cooler air.
