Beautiful warm start to spring for Melbourne

Beautiful warm start to spring for Melbourne

OK Melbourne, here comes the spring weather you've been waiting for.

Winter is officially on the way out, and Wednesday and Thursday look like absolute gems, with a forecast maximum on Wednesday, September 1, of 23°C while Thursday should reach an absolutely gorgeous 26°C.

It's all thanks to warm northerly winds ahead of a cold front which you can see indicated by the orange arrow on the Tuesday 5 pm synoptic chart. The winds could get quite blustery at times, but it should still be an extremely pleasant couple of days to venture outdoors for exercise.

The last time Melbourne hit the mid twenties or higher was May 2, when the maximum reached 26.0°C. So that'll be a gap of over 120 days since the last time the mercury reached the quarter-century mark.

Northern parts of Victoria should be even warmer on Thursday, with a top of 33°C predicted for Mildura.

Interestingly, the last day of winter reached 20.1°C in Melbourne, making it three days this August that temps have reached 20°C. No days of 20°C or higher were recorded in June or July this year, which is unsurprising as historically, these are the two coldest months of the year.

So the warm spell is already upon us, but all good things must end, especially with Melbourne's famously fickle weather, and the weekend should see a return to wintry conditions with tops in the mid teens. Friday looks set to be wet ahead of the cold change, with some showers persisting into the weekend.
