Adelaide's warmest night in three years
Adelaide locals could be excused for being a bit grumpy this Friday morning, after the city sweltered through by far its hottest night of the 2022/23 summer, and its hottest night in more than three years.
- After maximum temperatures nudged 40°C across the city on Thursday, the minimum dropped to just 29.6°C at 7:18 am, but it was much hotter than that throughout the night. Indeed at midnight it was still 32°C.
- That made Adelaide's minimum for Friday morning 1.1 degrees warmer than Darwin's unseasonably cool maximum of 28.5°C for Thursday which we wrote about yesterday.
- Numerous other South Australian locations also had their warmest night in years, including Kingscote, the largest town on Kangaroo Island, which had its highest minimum in 16 years at 24.9°C.
The heatwave ends today
The good news for sweaty South Australians is that the heatwave which we wrote about on Thursday will dissipate later this afternoon.
A cold front has already moved through the southwestern part of the state, dropping temps significantly. You can see the drastic difference in live temps just before 9 am Australian Central Daylight Time (ACDT) on the image above.
You can also see the cloudband associated with the front, but don't be fooled. Despite its impressive appearance, there's not much rain expected, although a shower and storm here and there in southern SA is possible.
Adelaide's official forecast maximum for Friday is 40ºC, although it may be slightly cooler than this. The city can then expect a mild and mostly fine spell of weather for the next week, with top temps in the mid-20s.
