Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology, National Water Operations Major Flood Warning For The Diamantina River And Final Flood Warning For The Western River Issued at 11:47 AM AEST on Monday 02 March 2026 Flood Warning Number: 60 MAJOR FLOODING POSSIBLE ALONG THE DIAMANTINA RIVER AT BIRDSVILLE LATER IN THE WEEK Significant rainfall has been observed across the Diamantina catchment during the last few days that has resulted in rapid river level rises. Elevated river levels are occurring downstream of Diamantina Lakes, with moderate flooding occurring at Birdsville. Further rises may cause major flooding at Birdsville later in the week as upstream flows arrive. Diamantina River to Diamantina Lakes: The Diamantina River at Diamantina Lakes is currently at 5.67 m and rising, above the moderate flood level (4.00 m) and well above the Springvale Diamantina Lakes Road Causeway level (2.10 m). Western River: No further flooding is expected along the Western River at Winton. The Western River at Winton is currently at 1.10 m and steady, below the minor flood level. The Western River at Winton is expected to remain below the minor flood level (1.50 m). Diamantina River downstream of Diamantina Lakes: Moderate flooding is occurring at Roseberth and Birdsville. Minor flooding is occurring at Monkira. The Diamantina River at Birdsville Police Station is currently at 7.30 m and rising, with moderate flooding. The Diamantina River at Birdsville Police Station may reach around the major flood level (8.00 m) later in the week. Further rises are possible as upstream flows arrive. Peak forecasts will be provided as upstream peaks are observed. Flood Safety Advice: Don't drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater because it is dangerous. Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways. Obey road closure signs. Plan ahead so you don't drive on flooded roads. Check the ABC and local media for updates.
