When it rains over Uluru

When it rains over Uluru
The sunrise this morning likely made the ancient sandstone formation of Uluru glow a glorious red at dawn, although cloud and rain from today should lead to more demure morning displays for the next couple of days. So far this month, 72mm has fallen over the course of five days. Most of the rain fell in one day, when 39mm fell on Sunday 8 May. This is well above the average rainfall for May, which is usually around 15mm. While this was a great deal of rainfall for a single day, the highest May rainfall day ever recorded was 42.4mm, on the 21st May 2013. As the end of May looms, it looks like a few more drops could fall over the interior. A band of cloud is currently extending from the northwest over region, and could produce isolated patches of rainfall today. Peering into the end of May, it looks likely that another 10mm could grace the region when a trough extending over the interior will broaden, causing rain, cloud and the odd storm to linger into early June. Those breathtaking displays of morning red should be back in no time at all, with conditions beginning to clear up by next week Friday.
