Weather clearing for NRL Grand Final

Anthony Sharwood

The 2022 NRL Grand Final between defending premiers the Penrith Panthers and the Parramatta Eels at Accor Stadium in Sydney on Sunday evening should be played in mostly fine conditions, albeit with a damp surface.

There has been plenty of wet weather around the Sydney region and indeed much of NSW this week, which is no great shock to those who have become accustomed to the general pattern of things in 2022.

That wet Sydney weather should continue into the weekend and we may even see showers on the morning of the grand final, as south to southeasterly winds continue to drive moisture onto the coast and nearby areas.

So even with stadium's good drainage, the playing surface will be at least a little moist.

But the good news is that the Tasman Sea low which is funnelling moist winds onshore is moving further out to sea each day, and should just about have reached New Zealand by lunchtime on Sunday, meaning its influence on Sydney will be strongly waning by kick-off at 7:30 pm.

A few clouds will stick around but the chance of rainfall decreases significantly by the evening, with temps hovering around 13°C or 14°C and only feeling slightly cooler in the light winds.

So pack your wet weather gear if you're lucky enough to be going to the game, and don't forget to bring it home with you afterwards. (We're here to give weather info, not lifestyle advice, but seriously, how often have you left an umbrella or raincoat somewhere when you didn't use it?)

As for the team with the best record on a slippery surface, we actually Googled that but there are no such stats available on the official NRL page.

The best we can offer in terms of a tip for the match is to predict a big game from star Penrith Panthers halfback Nathan Cleary, who of course won the Churchill Medal for best-on-ground in last year's premiership decider.

After all, you'd expect Cleary to go well when the weather is "clearing".
