Unseasonably chilly winds to bring showers, even highland snow to Australia's southeast

Brett Dutschke, Saturday April 17, 2021 - 13:55 EST

Much of the coming week or so looks like staying cooler than average in Australia's southeast due to the passing of frequent fronts which also bring the chance of snowfalls to the peaks.

Temperatures are likely to run about a degree below the late April average in Adelaide, Melbourne and Canberra, only experiencing brief warming.

The fronts keeping the region unseasonably chllly are expected to keep winds blowing from the southwest much of the time, bringing cloud and occasional showers, even the chance of small hail and highland snowfalls.

The chilliest winds should affect southeastern states between Tuesday and Saturday, strong enough at times to make it feel a few degrees colder than the actual temperature.

In terms of snowfall potential, it's not looking plentiful but that's to be expected at this time of year. As much as two-to-five centimetres worth is on the cards at some of the highest parts of Tasmania, Victoria and southern New South Wales. A few flurries among showers could fall lower than 1000 metres in Tasmania and as low as about 1300 metres in Victria and southern NSW.

Showers in Canberra should only be brief, most likely on Tuesday night, the rest of the time in dry westerly winds under mostly clear skies. These dry winds and mostly clear skies will lead to a run of chilly nights and potentially some light frost on some mornings.
