Tropical Cyclone Nathan delivers heavy rain to tropical Queensland

Tristan Meyers
Tropical Cyclone Nathan is spiraling just off the Peninsula Coast of far north Queensland, delivering torrential rain and strong winds. For an area that is used to heavy rainfall, several locations recorded impressive rainfall this morning and yesterday. The harbour town of Cardwell received its heaviest March falls since 2012. Luckily, Hinchinbrook Island help to save Cardwell and its boats from the nastiest swell, which was up to 3 metres just to the east of Shepherd Bay. The town of Weipa was barraged. Downpours were fast and heavy, sometimes unloading 25mm in just 10 minutes. Just to the east at Scherger RAAF, storms dumped 20mm in the same amount of time. Daily totals at Weipa reached nearly 250mm, the largest since January 2013. Along with these intense showers, a line of thunderstorms teared across Cape York Peninsula last night and into this morning. Over 4500 strikes detected from within just 10 km of Weipa's town centre. Later today, Tropical Cyclone Nathan should slowly track northeast before adopting an easterly movement. As it moves offshore, it should intensify over warm waters but remain far from the Queensland coast.
