Sydney turns it on for the City2Surf

Mellissa Mackellar
Sydney is turning it on for the annual City2Surf fun run on Sunday, with sunny skies and light winds bringing perfect racing conditions. A high pressure system residing over eastern Australia is bringing clear skies and light winds this weekend, with Race Day set to see a crisp morning followed by a mild, sunny day. It will be nippy at the starting line on Sunday, after cooling to about nine degrees overnight. When the first contestants depart Hyde Park just before 8am it will be about ten degrees, with the shivery conditions adding extra nervous excitement to the atmosphere. It won't take long to warm up though, as bright sunny skies allow the mercury climb into the mid teens. Racers will discard their top layers quickly and charity groups will do well collecting the many thousands of jumpers left behind. Thankfully it won't get too hot, sitting in the mid-to-high teens for much of race. Light winds will also make for pleasant racing conditions without the resistance of a head wind. Sunny skies and Bondi's sparkling blue water will add to the glory of reaching the finish line, and with water temperatures sitting near 18 degrees, some may be tempted to cool off with a swim. By the time most have crossed the finish line it will have warmed close to 21 degrees, providing a glorious afternoon of celebrating in the sun. By comparison, last year's City2Surf was cold, wet and windy, only reaching 15 degrees. Under ideal conditions this year, we may see the race record coming under threat.
