Swell on the pump for the Gold Coast

Felix Levesque

Like clockwork, the pumping surf dawns on the southeast Queensland and northern NSW coast over the New Year's period.

Masses of surfers out enjoying the new easterly swell on the Superbank at Greenmount this morning. Swellnet

Surfers could be seen paddling out as early as 4am this morning as a fresh run of easterly swell filled into the points of southeast Queensland. Low pressure in the Coral Sea with a pronounced fetch of easterly winds will maintain swell heights of about 2 metres across an extended period of time lasting till possibly Wednesday of next week.

WaveWatch III Significant Wave Heights of 2-2.5m across southeast Queensland and Northern New South Wales on Sunday morning.

Size and period will ebb and pulse over this timeframe, but a consistent run of 4 to 6 foot surf will persist under a generally favourable regime of south to southeasterly winds, possibly tending more offshore in the mornings. Conditions will be good for the points, while beaches more exposed to the wind will be less clean, giving ample opportunity for new Christmas boards to get wet around New Years.

While surfers may rejoice at the prospect of this run of pumping surf, beachgoers should maintain caution with the straight on easterly direction making for heavy breaking waves across many beaches. A pulse of longer period swell over the weekend and the start of next week will amplify movement of water into stronger rips and currents. While swell height should remain below 3 meters over this period, some minor beach erosion may occur across erosion prone coasts and beaches, like Byron Bay Main Beach.
