Sunshine and warm days on the horizon for the UK
Warm and sunny weather is on the way for parts of the UK later this week under the influence of a slow-moving high pressure system.
The high pressure will be located to the north of the UK on Tuesday but then often lie across the UK from late Wednesday onwards. While a few showers will move westwards early on Tuesday, and some showers may move into the south-west of England on Wednesday, there will be a lot of dry weather across the UK through the rest of the week with increasing amounts of sunshine.
Relief from the rain for the north-west UK
High pressure near the north of the UK is breaking the pattern often seen so far this month of low pressure near the north of the UK bringing plenty of rain and showers. Some sites in the north-west of the UK have already seen more than their April average, with Glasgow already having received 45% more than would be expected. However, the rest of this week will see largely dry conditions. Temperatures will even reach the high teens for some later this week although low cloud may affect eastern and northern coasts at times.

Little, if any, rain for the south-east
The same pattern that has seen plentiful rain in the north-west has led to much less rain in south-eastern areas of the UK. There have been a few hail and thundershowers at times, but some parts of East Anglia have missed out and recorded less than a millimetre of rain so far this month. With high pressure dominating conditions in the coming week the dry weather looks set to continue. Although Tuesday will be breezy with temperatures close to normal the rest of the week will see temperatures rise. Highs later on will reach the high teens inland, maybe tipping over 20°C for some.
Chilly nights
Despite the daytime temperatures rising through the week temperatures will still dip away overnight. Ground frost is likely towards dawn in some places, with air temperatures likely to drop below zero in some of the coldest spots.
Change this weekend
The weekend is likely to see the weather patterns start to change subtly. Cooler air will likely try to make it down from the north but at least the south should have another fine and warm day ahead of this on Saturday.
Despite this brief cool change, high pressure will stay close by and many areas should see the dry spell continue into next week. For those taking part in the TCS London Marathon on Sunday, April 27, expect dry and mostly sunny weather with a gentle breeze on race day.
