Strongest wind in 10 years blasts parts of Tasmania

Strongest wind in 10 years blasts parts of Tasmania

The weather station at the top of kunanyi / Mount Wellington clocked its strong wind gust in a decade on Thursday morning, with more dangerous wind on the way for all of Tasmania.

The passage of a strong cold front caused squally winds to develop over parts of Tasmania on Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

The strongest winds so far today occurred early in the morning, with wind gusts reaching 172 km/h at kunanyi / Mount Wellington, 143 km/h at Maatsuyker Island, 133 km/h at Hartz Mountain and 94 km/h in Hobart between 4am and 9am.

The gust of 172 km/h at kunanyi / Mount Wellington was the site's strongest wind gust since 2011 and its strongest on record during September. This is the type of wind gust you would find near the eye of a category three severe tropical cyclone.

Wind will temporarily ease in Tasmania on Thursday afternoon as this first cold front moves out into the Tasman Sea. However, another strong front is marching towards the state and it's going to cause more dangerous wind on Friday.

Northwesterly winds will strengthen across Tasmania on Friday morning ahead of the approaching front. Much colder southwesterly winds will then spread across the state during the day as the cold front sweeps through.

Damaging wind gusts are possible in every district of Tasmania on Friday, most likely from late morning until early evening.

The cold air in the wake of the front will cause temperatures to plummet, with snow likely to reach down to about 100-200 metres above sea level on Friday night into Saturday morning. Some snow flurries could even reach sea level.

These two fronts and the cold air behind them will cause a dangerous mix of wintry weather in Tasmania. Several warnings have been issued, including a Severe Weather Warning, a Road Weather Alert, a Bushwalker's Weather Alert and a Sheep Grazier's warning. The severe weather warning for damaging winds covers the entire state.
