Snowy Wednesday in Tasmania

Snowy Wednesday in Tasmania

A burst of wintry weather will cause chilly winds, showers and highland snow across Tasmania today, with Hobart expected to have a near-isothermal day of unwavering temperatures.

A mid-autumn cold front swept across Tasmania on Wednesday morning, bringing showers and a surge of cold air from the Southern Ocean. The sequence of satellite images below shows the cold air and showers arriving over Tasmania as the sun rose on Wednesday.

Showers will affect most western and far southern parts of Tasmanian on Wednesday, with a few falls also making it across the mountains to the state’s east. Temperatures should be cold enough for showers to fall as snow above about 900 metres elevation, with a few flakes possible on Kunanyi / Mount Wellington during the day.

Hobart won’t see any snow in the city today, although the temperature is only forecast to reach a high of around 14ºC, three below average for this time of year. Wind chill will make it feel even colder than this, most likely below 10ºC all day.

Interestingly, Hobart’s maximum temperature on Wednesday will only be about two degrees warmer than its morning minimum temperature of 12ºC. Meteorologists refer to days of equal temperature as ‘isothermal’ days.
