A trough extending from Western Australia down into Tasmania, with an associated cold front, brought healthy rainfall totals to southeastern parts of South Australia from Friday to Sunday morning.

The highest daily totals until 9am on Saturday morning for southeast SA were Coonawarra (25mm), Cape Jaffa (24mm), Robe (20mm) and Kingscote (19mm).

The 24 hour rainfall totals to Sunday morning from this system do not seem as impressive in comparison. Amongst the highest totals were Point Avoid, Padtahway, Hindmarsh Island and Kuitpo registering 17mm, 15mm, 14mm and 13mm respectively.

However, taking a look at the bigger picture, these figures represent some of the highest September 24-hour totals for a few years. Padthaway (15mm), Meningie (13mm), Karoonda (9mm) and Lameroo (8mm) all had their highest September rain since 2016. Strathalbyn (12mm), Victor Harbor (12mm) and Neptune Island (7mm) had their highest 24 hour totals for this month since 2017.

This was the heaviest daily rainfall that some locations, including Lameroo, Karoonda and Meningie, had seen for a couple of months. Adelaide also registered 9mm, its equal highest total since June this year.

Looking ahead, conditions should be much clearer with a broad high pressure system forming over the state. However, as that high moves away a low pressure cell may bring some more widespread falls over SA midway through the coming week.
