Respite for coastal NSW over the King’s weekend

Respite for coastal NSW over the King’s weekend

Since the start of this month, many cities along NSW’s south and central coasts have seen rain or showers each day. And this is thanks to the two low pressure systems which had developed off Australia’s east coast: the first on Saturday the 1st of June and the second late Wednesday the 5th.

These systems brought flooding rainfall and hazardous surf conditions along the coastline, with many cities receiving double the June average rainfall in a single event. Sydney’s Observatory Hill saw 212.0mm of rain in the past week, which is 60% more than June’s monthly average rainfall of 131.7mm. This makes it the second wettest opening week of June, behind June 2016. Areas south of Sydney also experienced very heavy rainfall this week:

  • Culburra received 285.0mm of rain in the first week of June, which is more than double the monthly average.
  • Shellharbour received 193.8mm of rainfall in the 48 hours to Friday 7th, which is 85% more than the monthly average.
  • Nowra received 212.6mm of rainfall in the 48 hours to Friday 7th, which is greater than twice the monthly average.
  • Kiama received 227.2mm of rain in the first week of June, which is 83% more than the monthly average.
  • Albion Park received 181.0mm of rain in the last 48 hours, which is 88% more than the monthly average.

Fig. 1) Accumulated detected rainfall over Shoalhaven and Illawarra from 9am Thu 6th of June to 7:10am Fri 7th of June.

As this second low pushes east, sunny weather is expected to return to the east over the coming days, with signs of showers only returning at the end of the week with a wintry front crossing the southeast. So, ditch those raincoats and enjoy the sunshine for the long weekend NSW!
