Waterfalls were cascading down the sides of Uluru and Kata Tjuta earlier this week as Australia’s Red Centre had its first soaking of the year.

Tropical moisture being carried by the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Tiffany caused heavy rain in central Australia on Sunday and Monday.

The tropical soaking transformed the typically dry Red Centre, with around 45mm of rain leaving waterfalls and pools on Uluru and Kata Tjuta on Monday.

While waterfalls were also seen on Uluru several times in 2021, it’s not uncommon for the monolith to go months or even whole years without enough rain to make water flow down its sides.

In 2019, the rain gauge at nearby Yulara Airport only received 27mm of rain during the entire year. By contrast, there has already been more than 47mm of rain in the first 19 days 2022.

Uluru’s average annual rainfall is 268.1mm.
