Over 100 different stations have had their hottest September day or night in at least a decade, including new state records in New South Wales and Victoria. Wilcannia in NSW's northwest now holds the state record for the highest September maximum temperature at 40.5 degrees on Saturday. Mildura also beat the VIC September record at 37.7 degrees. The nation's capital Canberra had their hottest September day in 76 years of records, reaching 30 degrees. The sweltering temperatures also persisted overnight over NSW and southern Queensland. Sydney saw its hottest September minimum in 158 years of records only falling to 23.0 degrees at 9am on Saturday. Despite this, temperatures were around 27-29 degrees through much of the night. The warmest place this morning in NSW was Scone, only dropping to 25.8 degrees just before sunrise, 19 degrees above the average. Luckily for VIC, a cool change moved through late last night relieving them from the heat. All up, around half of all observation stations (61 out of around 120) in NSW, in conjunction with 28 stations in VIC and three stations in QLD saw their hottest September day or night in at least the last decade. In NSW and QLD, 18 stations sweated through their hottest September night on record. The complex low pressure system and trough is continuing to bring hot and windy conditions to northern NSW and southern QLD today and for the next few days. A substantial cool change for these areas is not expected until next Saturday, with a strong cold front.
