Port Hedland quadruples June rainfall

Ben Domensino
Port Hedland has recorded its heaviest rain since Tropical Cyclone Rusty as parts of the Pilbara continue their soggy start to winter. A deep low pressure trough over the region delivered 73mm of rain at Port Hedland during the 24 hours to 9am Tuesday. This is the second heaviest June total in the last 55 years and follows the 23mm that fell the previous day. Further inland, a rain gauge at Tumbinna Pool registered 57mm and nearby Marble Bar had their heaviest June rain since 2005, with 44mm. The second day of widespread rainfall in the Pilbara brings Port Hedland's running total for June to 99.4mm after just four days, almost five times the long term average of 20.7mm. Port Hedland's wet start to the month follows their wettest May in over a decade, with almost twice the long term average recorded last month. Looking ahead, the region can expect more wet weather during the months ahead in what would typically be one of the driest parts of the year. Warm waters building up across the eastern Indian Ocean are expected to boost rainfall over the state's north and Interior during the winter months ahead. Typically Port Hedland receives 20.7mm during June, 11.4mm during July and 4.9mm during August.
