Perth just had its wettest day so far this year as a burst of wind and rain swept over southwestern Australia.

A cold front brought close to 100mm of rain to some areas near Perth during the 24 hours to 9am on Monday.

Bickley's 90mm during this period was its highest daily total in two and a half years and its wettest June day since at least 1997. Perth's Metro rain gauge collected 38mm up to 9am, its highest 24-hour total since July last year.

In addition to the rain, wind gusts reached 107km/h at Cape Leeuwin and 94km/h at Cape Naturaliste and Busselton Jetty on Monday morning. Gusts also exceeded 90km/h at Bunbury on Sunday night.

There were also close to 7500 lightning strikes detected within a 100km radius of Perth during the 12 hours ending at 6am on Monday.

Conditions will gradually ease over southwestern Australia as the system moves further east during Monday afternoon and overnight. However, a second weaker front will bring another burst of wind and rain to parts of Western Australia's Southwest Land Division on Tuesday.

Calmer weather will return from Wednesday as a slow-moving high pressure system moves over the state.
