Up to 10cm of fresh snow has fallen across Australia’s mainland alpine region, with slightly heavier falls reported in Tasmania as a cold front crossed the southeast of the continent.

Weather charts suggested that this was never going to be the coldest, most moisture-laden, or longest-lasting snow system of the year for the mainland.

But it did its job, leaving 5cm of snow down to about 1400m in NSW and Victoria, with slightly more up high. It was also a brief but very windy system, with a gust of 111 km/h reported at Thredbo Top Station,

The big winner from this system was Tasmania, where locals reported 18cm of fresh snow at Ben Lomond, the state’s only commercial ski resort, about an hour from Launceston.

That snow will be particularly welcome as Ben Lomond missed out on the three-day blizzard that left 50 to 70cm of snow accumulated at the mainland resorts over the June long weekend in the best start to the season in several years.

Meanwhile another potentially significant snow system is on the horizon for next week, with early forecasts calling for several days of snow and strong winds.
