It only took Melbourne ten and half months to register a year's worth of rain in 2020.

In an average year, Melbourne would receive 648.3mm of rain between the start of January and the end of December. 

As of 9am last Thursday, the city's running annual total was up to 647.4mm. By 9am on Friday, it tipped over to 648.8mm and by the start of this week, it was up to 657.4mm.

This is the first time Melbourne has exceeded its annual average rainfall since 2011. It's also the first time it's happened this early in the year since 1996.

While this year's rain is impressive on its own, Melbourne's run of wet weather during the last 10 months has been a remarkable turnaround from 2019. The city only saw 374.4mm last year. This year, it took less than four months to record the same amount.

More rain will fall in Melbourne on Friday and Saturday as a low pressure system drifts across southeastern Australia. These raindrops will help push the city a little closer to Melbourne's annual rainfall record of 967.5mm from 1916.
