Melbourne returns to warm 2014
Ben Domensino

Melbourne recently ended a near-record run of warm days with its coolest spell since November, although temperatures are bouncing back.
The temperature failed to reach 20 degree in Melbourne from Saturday to Monday, the first three-day spell this cool since spring.
Maximums each day of around 19 degrees during this period were by no means cold for veteran Melbournians, although locals will be forgiven for noticing a little bit of chill in the air.
Saturday was the first day so far in 2014 to pull up short of 20 degrees. It also ended the third longest spell of 20-degree days on record at the start of a calender year.
There have only been three occasions in the past 159 years of records that Melbourne has made it this far into a year without a day below 20 degrees. Unsurprisingly, all three of these occurrences were during the past decade, in 2010 and 2007. The longest spell was in 2010, lasting 100 days between January 1st and April 10th.
The most recent cool spell occurred as a result of cloudy skies and a mild air mass lingering over southern Victoria, behind a series of weak cold fronts.
Cloud is patchier over Melbourne today and a warmer air mass is filtering into Victoria from the north. These conditions have allowed the temperature to once again climb into the low twenties today and tomorrow is expected to reach about 26 degrees, two above average for this time of year.
Looking ahead, the city will continue its run of warmer-than-usual days for the next week. Each day will reach at least the low twenties, possibly nudging close to 30 degrees at the beginning of next week.
