Melbourne cooler at 3 pm than 3 am as change sweeps across city

Melbourne is famous for having four seasons in a day, but today it seems like the hours of the clock are more confused than the seasons.

After a day of northerlies on Tuesday brought a top of 32 degrees to the city, temperatures remained in the extremely warm range for November overnight into Wednesday.

The official minimum was 22.8 degrees – the warmest of the month to date and more than double the average November minimum of 11.2 degrees. It was also the warmest November night since 2012.

At 3 am, many Melburnians would have been tossing the blankets aside as the mercury hovered at a very balmy 25.4 degrees. The night didn’t get much cooler and Wednesday soon warmed to the high 20s. But skies clouded over by mid-afternoon, bringing cooler temperatures.

At 3 pm, the temperature had dropped to 23.6 as a rainband swept across the city.

The most dramatic weather in the Victorian capital today may yet be the storms which are likely to strike later this afternoon or evening.

Large parts of western and central Victoria have already seen storm activity, with a large band of storms and associated lightning extending from the Murray all the way down to the southern coastline.

With this volatile weather around, the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services has forecast a high chance of epidemic thunderstorm asthma in parts of the state, as we told you earlier today.

Meanwhile, the weather should be more settled in Melbourne on Friday and into the early part of the weekend, with temperatures in the low 20s or high teens and only a slight chance of rain. Things look like heating up on Sunday with a top of 31 degrees forecast.
