Intense rain floods the Sunshine Coast

Josh Fisher
A severe weather warning for heavy rainfall is in place for the Southeast Coast district of Queensland tonight, with the Sunshine Coast already awash as more than 100mm fell in one hour. A small but intense low pressure system is developing along a trough extending along the southeast Queensland coast. This developing low is generating very heavy rainfall near the coast, leading to flash flooding. Maroochydore was flooded by 107mm of rain in the hour leading up to 4:30pm and has seen more than 160mm today. Maroochydore's entire monthly average is 152mm, which was exceeded in just three hours. Nearby, Bundilla was also drenched by 125mm of rain in one hour. This intense burst of rainfall is slowly pushing south along the coast this evening and is due to affect Brisbane. A severe weather warning is in place for heavy rainfall that is likely to lead to flash flooding this evening and during the overnight hours. The heaviest rainfall will clear before sunrise tomorrow as this low pressure system moves further offshore. For the remainder of Friday, just a shower or two will linger around with even some sunny breaks developing.
