Hail in WA, with snow a chance this morning

Hail in WA, with snow a chance this morning

Hail has blanketed parts of Western Australia's Great Southern District amid a surge of icy weather on Monday morning.

A cold air mass moving up from the Southern Ocean is today spreading over southwestern districts of Western Australia.

While showers, thunderstorms, blustery winds and cold air have been affecting the state's southwest since the weekend, the coldest part of this air mass is arriving this morning (Monday).

Streets in Albany were covered in a coating of small hail in the early hours of Monday morning as showers pushed ashore within the frigid parcel of air.

At 4am AWST, when the hail was reportedly at its peak, the temperature at Albany Airport was about 7ºC. However, computer model suggests that it was 0ºC about one kilometre above the ground, which helped hail reach the surface before melting.

There were also reports of small hail at Narrogin and Badgebup on Sunday afternoon.

It was even cold enough for a very light dueting of snow on the higher peaks of the Stirling Range around daybreak on Monday.

Monday morning's cold air and icy winds were combining to make it feel numbingly cold in some areas, particularly along the exposed coasts and ranges in the state's south. At 7am, the temperature at Albany Airport was 7ºC but it felt like 0.5ºC due to wind chill. Further inland at Jacup, it felt like –0.3ºC at the same time.

Perth is only forecast to reach a top of 16ºC today, which would be the city's coldest day in nine months.

Warmer and drier weather will return to the southwest of Western Australia from Tuesday as a high pressure ridge develops over the region.
