Frigid Sunday morning in Sydney

Andrew Casper-Richardson

Some Sydney suburbs shivered through their coldest morning of the year on Sunday.

Camden, Badgerys Creek, Campbelltown and Bankstown all had their coldest morning since last winter. Camden was the coldest suburb with a low of -0.4. This is the first time the suburb has dropped below zero since August last year.

Badgerys Creek dropped to 0.6 degrees, 3.5 below the July average whilst Bankstown recorded a low of 3.5 and Campbelltown 1.4. It was milder closer to the coast where the city had a minimum of 8.2, close to average and it was a full degree colder in early June.

The frigid start to the day was brought about by a ridge of high pressure over the Sydney Basin. The high brought mostly clear skies and light winds, allowing the warmth from the previous day to escape.

Monday morning won't be as cold with most western suburbs likely to be at least a couple of degrees warmer than Sunday morning.
