Summer-like warmth will grip the eastern half of the United States early this week as a strong Bermuda High causes temperatures to climb 10 to 20 degrees above normal.

Record high temperatures are forecast to impact the eastern half of the U.S. from the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic states, and New England early this week, under the influence of the Bermuda High.

The heat wave will peak on Tuesday into Wednesday and cities like Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Md. should top out at 95 to 97 degrees. Hot temperatures are also expected in the Southeast and across the Gulf Coast states. The Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida have been experiencing extreme drought conditions this spring, and this heat wave and dry period are likely to make this drought worse.

When will it cool down?

Relief from these temperatures will start to come to some areas from Wednesday as a cold front moves across the central U.S. and into the eastern U.S. This cooling trend for the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states will continue through the end of the week.

Heat safety this summer

This week’s warm lead up to Memorial Day weekend coincides with Heat Safety Week. The National Integrated Heat Health System (NIHHIS) teams up with the National Weather Service (NWS) and other federal entities annually to bring awareness to heat safety.

As the summer months are quickly approaching, it is important to remember ways to stay cool and hydrated as temperatures rise. It is also crucial to know how to spot heat stroke and heat exhaustion, especially for those who work outside.

Tips to Beat the Heat:

  • Stay hydrated – drink more water than usual. Don’t wait until you are thirsty.
  • Never leave children or pets in a parked car.
  • Be aware if there are any extreme heat alerts for your area.
  • Know the signs for Heat Stroke vs Heat Exhaustion.
  • When spending time outside wear light clothing to help you stay cool.
  • Stay indoors in air conditioning when you can or stay in a shaded area if you must be outdoors.
