Could Perth be Australia's coldest capital city today?

Anthony Sharwood

It doesn't happen very often in October, or in any month for that matter, but there's a fair chance that Perth could record the lowest maximum temperature of any Australian capital city this Wednesday.

It's touch and go as we write this story, but at 2:40 pm local time, Perth is sitting on 18.1°C, having reached a peak so far today of 18.6 °C at 2:27 pm.

The three Australian capital cities with the lowest maximums recorded by today were:

  • Hobart 18.8°C
  • Canberra 18.9°C
  • Melbourne 21.6°C

So Perth would have to come very close to Wednesday's forecast maximum of 19°C to miss out on being our coldest capital today, and it may narrowly miss the 19-degree mark with light but cool southwesterlies prevailing over the city.

Perth started today in decidedly chilly fashion, with a minimum of 4.7°C which was the coldest minimum since September 4. The overnight low wasn't quite as frigid as Canberra's 1.6°C, but it was a clear silver medallist among the cool overnight capitals by several degrees.

Temperatures should again drop to about 5°C tomorrow morning in Perth, with maximums around the 21°C for the next few days.

The average temps for October in the WA capital are 11.6°C (min) and 23.4°C (max), but as long as these southwesterlies stick around, temps are likely to hover a little below normal for most of this week.

With a long hot summer ahead, we'll sure not too many of you will mind.
