Coldest morning of 2024 in parts of NSW, Qld

Ben Domensino

Sydney and other areas of eastern Australia just shivered through their coldest morning so far this year.

A cold pool of air combined with clear skies and relatively light winds allowed temperatures to plummet across parts of eastern Australia on Monday night into Tuesday morning.

As the sun rose on Tuesday, temperatures were in the single digits across a large swathe of NSW and southern Qld, even dipping below zero in some places.

Some of the standout observations were:

  • -2.0°C in Stanthorpe was Qld’s lowest temperature on Tuesday morning
  • -1.6°C in Applethorpe was its coldest morning in 11 months
  • -4.7°C at Perisher Valley was the coldest minimum in NSW
  • -1.4°C at Warwick, coldest morning since July
  • 8.1°C at Sydney Observatory Hill, coldest morning since September

Tuesday morning’s cold minimum temperatures in eastern Australia follow a bout of relatively cold weather in the nation's north late last week.

Darwin had its coldest June morning in five years after dipping to 15.5°C on Saturday, while Pirlangimpi's low of 12.5°C on Saturday was its lowest June temperature in 13 years.

Another cold front crossing southeastern Australia on Tuesday will maintain wintry weather into the middle of this week. This system will bring rain, hail, damaging winds and snow over the next couple of days.
