Cold early spring

Sunday started with subzero temperatures in parts of southeastern Australia, as a cold air mass swept across the region. The lowest temperature recorded in the country early this morning was a frigid -8.2°C at Thredbo Top Station, NSW. 

In Albury, located on the border between New South Wales and Victoria, residents experienced their coldest September morning in 31 years, with the mercury plunging to -2.2°C. This was a significant drop, the coldest September morning since records began at Albury airport weather station in 1993.   

Victoria also saw notable records, with Walpeup waking up to its coldest September morning in 29 years at -1.1°C. Similarly, Yanco in New South Wales recorded a temperature of -0.2°C, the lowest for September since 1999.

South Australia wasn’t spared from the cold snap either. Keith (Munkora) had the coldest September temperature record for the town and the second coldest morning of any month, with temperatures dropping to -4.6°C. Over in Tasmania, kunanyi/Mount Wellington recorded its coldest September morning in the last 3 years, with a temperature of -5.1°C.

Looking ahead, another round of cold weather is expected over southeast Australia tomorrow morning, with a chance of freezing temperatures, mainly over eastern Victoria and southeast New South Wales and frost conditions to South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania.
