Bali flights delay only brief

Brett Dutschke
Flights in and out of Bali may resume as early as tomorrow due to the likelihood of volcanic ash cloud being blown away from the airport. Ash from Volcano Raung is currently billowing as high as about 17,000 feet (about five kilometres) into the air and winds are sending that ash in a south-southeasterly direction, towards Bali's Denpasar Airport, leading to flight cancellations. Unlike previous recent interruptions, the delay should only be brief, possibly only as much as about one day. Winds five kilometres in the atmosphere are about to ease and shift direction, causing the ash cloud to be contained to a smaller area and then blow to the north and northwest of Denpasar. From Thursday onwards the upper-level winds should then gain speed and take any ash cloud west of Raung, further away from the airport. Barring any further significant eruptions, this should leave the sky relatively ash free for the following few days, enabling tourists to get in and out with relative ease.
