Adelaide breaking December records by night and day

Ben Domensino

Adelaide just had its second warmest night in 132 years of records, setting the city up to register it's warmest December day in as many years on Friday.

Adelaide's West Terrace weather station reached 45.3 degrees on Thursday, setting a new December maximum temperature record for the city. This heat lingered into the night, with the temperature at West Terrace staying above 33.6 degrees throughout Thursday night and Friday morning. At midnight, it was 37.6 degrees in the city.

This was Adelaide's warmest December night on record, beating 31.8 degrees from 1897. It's also the city's second highest minimum temperature for any month in records dating back to 1887, beaten only by 33.9 degrees in January 2009.

The hot start to the day should see Adelaide comfortably reach the mid forties on Friday, with the city forecast to reach 46 degrees. This would beat yesterday's 45.3 to become Adelaide's new highest daily maximum temperature on record for December.

Adelaide's all-time highest temperature was 47.7 degrees on January 24th this year, from the city's Kent Town weather station. The record at West Terrace is 46.6 degrees from the same day.
