What are snow conditions like this weekend?

What are snow conditions like this weekend?

We know that many of us, or most of us, are unable to go to the snow this weekend due to Covid lockdowns - but we still thought you'd be interested to read about current conditions, and the big dump of snow that's coming on Saturday and Sunday.

So here's the good or bad news, depending on how you interpret it.

The snow is amazing. Last weekend, up to 60 cm of snow fell in most resorts, and the snow continued into the new week. After missing out on early season snowfalls and looking at other resorts in envy, Mt Buller in Victoria clocked in with 93 cm of fresh fluffy white goodness this week.

That's a pic of Mt Buller's northern ski slopes below. Unfortunately the lifts are all closed as part of Victoria's statewide lockdown. But as we told you earlier this week, some locals who are stuck up on the hill still managed plenty of skiing this week, as part of their permitted exercise within a 5km radius of home. They just had to hike back up the hill afterwards.

So here's our wrap of what's happening with the snow right now.

Victoria

Nothing doing. Lots of snow everywhere but no lifts spinning. Here's hoping things change soon.

New South Wales

The resorts are still open in NSW, but for how long? Touch wood, they stay open to regional NSW visitors and locals, as they are now.

In Thredbo, all lifts are open. This is testament to solid snowfalls, but also to Thredbo boss Stuart Diver, who made the decision midweek to get everything up and running despite the lack of crowds.

Perisher is still operating at near-full capacity althought there is word that may soon change due to lack of demand. We'll keep you posted.

And Charlotte Pass is open too, with four of its five lifts turning.

As for the weather ahead...

You don't want to hear this, but serious snow is again coming this weekend. The forecasters on Weatherzone's snow page reckon that something in the order of 40 to 80 cm should fall in the mountains by the end of Monday. Then more snow is due Wednesday.

Sunday should be exceptionally cold across southeast Australia, with the chance of snow anywhere above about 600 or 700 metres in Victoria and southern NSW.

We'll tantalise/torment you with more images from the weekend snowfalls on Monday. Stay safe till then.
