Warmest November in Hobart for nine years
30/11/2009: Hobart has just experienced its warmest November in nine years, according to weatherzone.com.au.
The city had an average maximum of 20 degrees, slightly above the long term normal of 19. This made it the warmest November in terms of daytime temperatures since 2007.
However, there was some variability in the temperatures. For example, on the 20th, the mercury soared to 33 degrees, the hottest November day in six years. Then, just nine days later, on the 29th, the city shivered to a top of only 12, making it the coldest November day in two years.
The nights were also warm. Hobart had an average minimum of 11 degrees, above the long term normal of nine. This made it the mildest November in terms of overnight temperatures since 2000. In fact, on the morning of the 25th, the city did not fall below 16 degrees, the mildest November night in four years.
When both daytime and overnight temperatures were combined, Hobart’s average temperature came in at 16 degrees, above the long term normal of 14. This made it the warmest November since 2000.
"There were a couple of periods of significant heat during the month. These were associated with the persistent and widespread heatwave which unfolded across southern Australia. This heatwave was due to a blocking high in the Tasman and northerly winds carrying hot air down from the interior," weatherzone.com.au meteorologist Matt Pearce said.
The trend of warm weather was repeated right across Tasmania. For example, Burnie had an average maximum of 20 degrees, its highest for November in 60 years of records. Bushy Park had an average minimum of nine degrees, its highest for November in 71 years of records.
However, it was not a particularly dry month. Hobart picked up 69mm throughout November, above the long term normal of 54mm.
Mt Wellington received a whopping 202mm, its highest total for November in 27 years of records.
"The bulk of November’s rain fell right at the end of the month. A complex area of low pressure deepened to the east of Tasmania over the last couple of days, driving very moist easterly winds across the state, resulting in heavy rainfall and localised flash flooding," Pearce said.
"We are expecting daytime temperatures to return back closer to average through summer, and overnight temperatures to even fall slightly below average. Rainfall is likely to continue to be close to normal."
