Season-breaking rain to soak SA, VIC and NSW

30/05/2013: Rain is about to spread across South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales and it looks like season-breaking rain for many inland areas, according to weatherzone.com.au.

"In the next few days much of SA, northern Victoria and southern and central NSW can expect widespread falls of 25-to-50 millimetres with potential for as much as 80mm in places. The wettest area should be northeastern Victoria and southwestern NSW where more than 100mm is possible," Weatherzone meteorologist Brett Dutschke said.

This will turn out to be season-breaking rain for many farming areas, a boost for those hoping to sow their winter crops after a long dry spell.

It had become a desperate situation for much of the region. Since last winter most of it has received less than half the average rainfall and some has fallen into drought.

For those lucky enough to get decent rain early last week this will be good follow-up, adding substantial moisture to the soil.

"A low pressure trough will be joined by a cold front and link up with tropical moisture to form a northwest cloud band. It's the sort of feature that those on the land look out for at this time of year. It sometimes leads to soaking rain," Dutschke said.

"Whilst the rain will generally be useful for crops and gardens, it may come down too fast in places and lead to flash flooding. Some of the water will run across the ground to low-lying areas and not fully soak in where it is needed most. Heavy and gusty thunderstorms are also a threat, so people should beware."

Sheep graziers are also being warned about the threat of rain then colder winds.
