Heavy rain on the way for eastern New South Wales
16/06/2009: A wet week is beginning to unfold across eastern New South Wales, with heavy falls likely in coming days, according to weatherzone.com.au.
Showers developed along the southern New South Wales coast yesterday, and spread as far north as the Hunter today.
Over the next few days, falls in excess of 50mm will occur between Sydney and Coffs Harbour, with isolated falls exceeding 100mm possible.
"The Mid North Coast, in particular, would not be welcoming the news of more heavy rain, after three separate flood events in recent months. Fortunately, it is looking like the bulk of this week’s rain will fall further south," weatherzone.com.au meteorologist Matt Pearce said.
"The rain is being caused by easterly winds feeding in moisture from the Tasman Sea onto the New South Wales coast and ranges. Cold air in the upper atmosphere will assist in the development of heavy falls."
"At this stage, widespread flooding or damage is unlikely. However, with these setups, often all it takes is the development of a small-scale low pressure system to cause a localised period of torrential rain, which can trigger flash flooding with little warning."
Unfortunately, the rain will not penetrate west of the Great Dividing Range, leaving drought-affected areas of the state dry.
"The rain looks likely to clear from the coast over the weekend, before the possible development of another rainband from the west early next week," Pearce said.
