Biggest early-spring rain event in over a decade
02/09/2010: Soaking rain is starting to spread across every state and territory, in what will turn out to be the biggest early-spring rain event in more than a decade, according to weatherzone.com.au.
"Widespread 15 to 30 millimetres of rain will fall across a large area of the country, including nearly all agricultural areas, some of which are still drought declared."
"For many it will be the biggest rain in more than six months, for some the biggest early-spring rain in a generation," Weatherzone meteorologist Brett Dutschke said.
"Quite a few places will exceed their monthly average in about a day and September records will almost certainly be broken."
"There's even a very good chance of flooding, some of it may become serious."
Flood watches have already been issued in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales.
"The heaviest rain will fall across western parts of Queensland and New South Wales, the ACT, northeastern Victoria and inland South Australia. Totals will get well beyond 50mm with potential for in excess of 100mm," Dutschke said.
Significant rain has already affected the Western Australian inland. Some places have just had their heaviest rain in two years.
In the Central Wheat Belt, Dalwallinu picked up 36mm on Wednesday, their wettest September day in about 100 years.
In the Goldfields, Kalgoorlie has had more than 30mm in the first two days of the month, their highest two-day total in 18 months and highest for September in 26 years.
"A developing low pressure system is making good use of a very moist atmosphere, most of which has been flowing in from over the Indian Ocean."
"This low will slowly track east from Western Australia to the southeast of the country, bringing rain to more than three-quarters of the country."
According to weatherzone.com.au, even Hobart and Darwin are forecast to receive about 25 to 50mm.
