Adelaide has just experienced its third hottest day on record, according to weatherzone.com.au.
The city peaked at an astonishing 45.7 degrees at 3:30pm. Adelaide’s all-time record is 46.1 way back on the 12th January 1939.
"Today’s extreme heat is the result of northwesterly winds carrying very hot air down from the Pilbara and Interior districts of Western Australia where it has been building over the last month," weatherzone.com.au meteorologist Matt Pearce said.
"The bad news is that we have a lot more of this heat to endure before some cool relief arrives later next week. Temperatures are likely to exceed 40 degrees in Adelaide right through until the weekend, and possibly even into early next week."
Murray Bridge topped the state’s readings, hitting an incredible 48 degrees, its highest temperature since records began at the site in 2006.
"Unfortunately, the temperatures are going to stay up overnight. Adelaide is expecting a minimum tonight of 32 degrees, but it is likely to be above 35 for much of the night," Pearce said.
