Wintry nights for the southeast
Martin Palmer

Fog and frost returned to the southeast over the weekend as overnight temperatures plummeted below freezing.
After a warmer end to last week, a trough blew through during Friday drawing cooler air in behind. A high pressure ridge pushed in clearing skies, allowing the mercury to fall overnight. Parts of inland New South Wales fell five or even eight below average, with many going well below freezing. Orange dropped to a bone chilling minus two, five below average and their coldest in almost a month. Sustained sub-zero temperatures across the ski resorts helped with some artificial snow making too. Charlotte Pass fell to minus eight, five below average.
Across the border, in Victoria, severe frost warnings were issued for the Northeast district where minimums fell as low as minus three. Queensland also felt the chill, with the Channel Country, Central West and Darling Downs worst affected. Although frost was mostly averted here, lows as much as six or seven below average were recorded.
With the falling temperatures came fog too, with northern New South Wales and southeastern Queensland picking up the lion's share.
