Winter returns to Victoria

Winter returns to Victoria
After a run of unseasonable warmth a cold front has swept through Victoria, reminding everyone that it is the middle of winter. Just two days ago parts of the state had their warmest July day in over 150 years, including Melbourne reaching 23.3 degrees. The weekend will be a stark contrast to this with the mercury struggling in the low teens. Along with the winter-like temperatures will be the showers. To 9am on Saturday, 11mm had fallen in Melbourne with showers set to continue through the weekend. Every district in Victoria picked up some rainfall with some of the heavier falls occurring in the South West. Cape Nelson had 31mm reach the gauge, the highest in over a year and the highest daily July rainfall in at least 16 years. Wilsons Promontory in West & South Gippsland received 41mm, its highest July fall in four years. The North East also had some big totals but unfortunately for the snow resorts it was too warm for snow until late Friday night. Victorian resorts were reporting up to 18cm of snow this morning. The good news is that the cold airmass is set to linger over the Snowy Mountains for the next few days allowing for the snow level to drop to 700m on Sunday. Snow fall will be heaviest on Saturday with a further 40-80cm likely to fall over the next three days. The wintry conditions will continue until Tuesday when a high pressure system starts to move over the region bringing drier and calmer conditions.
