Wild winds and blizzards for Aussie alps

Wild winds and blizzards for Aussie alps
A series of cold fronts and a tight pressure gradient is generating intense winds in the Australian alps, with blizzard conditions likely to develop later today. Wind gusts only recently clocked 104km/h at Thredbo Top station, prompting the issue of a severe weather warning for the Snowy Mountains. A cold front will push through the region later this afternoon, causing snow showers to develop. The combination of strong winds and snow will mean blizzard conditions are likely at times, not safe for being out on the slopes. Those hoping for a good skiing weekend will be disappointed to know that the wild weather will stick around right until early next week. A secondary cold front will approach the region tomorrow, causing another barrage of northwesterly winds, likely to be even stronger than those seen today. These winds will persist into Sunday with gusts to 120km/h possible about the peaks, most likely during the morning. Blizzard conditions are also likely on both days. Conditions will ease for a period on Monday, before a final front approaches during the evening, potentially bringing the biggest punch yet. From Monday evening and into Tuesday afternoon wind gusts about the peaks could gust as strong as 130-140km/h, before easing by the evening. By Wednesday, winds will be significantly lighter as the pressure gradient over the region significantly weakens. The wild weather will bring some good news though, with most resorts likely to pick up 20-40cm of fresh snow, removing any of the slush that has formed due to the warmth over the past week.
