Wet in Wyndham, and other interesting facts

Wet in Wyndham, and other interesting facts
For the Western Australian Kimberley region, the words "wet and windy" would be a good description of December this year, with Tropical Cyclone Billy bringing an abundance of rainfall to the area. Over the course of the month, rainfall totals in the Kimberley have averaged around 200mm, with many places getting even more than that. Wyndham had the heaviest falls for the entire state, reaching a grand total of 573mm so far. This has already been its wettest December in 40 years of records. Comparatively, Cyclone Tracey brought a monthly total of 665mm to Darwin in 1974. Other places throughout northern WA that have had totals above 300mm include Kununurra, Troughton Island, and Fitzroy Crossing. Fitzroy Crossing actually had its wettest 24 hour rainfall in 11 years to 9am this morning, picking up 193mm. The Kimberley isn't the only part of WA affected by the Cyclone. As Billy rotates over warmer Indian Ocean waters, it is sending a lot of moisture into westerly winds aloft, which in turn is feeding into a trough over the inland. Today, this has brought heavy falls and potentially severe storms to the northern Goldfields and southwest Interior.
