Wet end to autumn for eastern states

Douglas Fenton
Much of eastern Australia will receive a soaking over the next few days. A low pressure system will develop over western NSW on Thursday and will draw in huge amounts of moisture. Humid easterly winds in Queensland will feed tropical moisture into the slow moving system. This humid air will funnel down into the southeast, bringing plentiful rain. An approaching cold pool of upper level air will further amplify the rainfall, bringing the east a very wet end to autumn after a generally dry first two and a half months. The rain event will produce scattered falls in excess of 100 millimetres in parts. On Thursday, the rainfall is going to ramp up from northern inland parts of Queensland down to southern New South Wales. There will be widespread falls over this region, amounting to 25 to 50 millimetres. Locally heavier falls are likely. On Friday, the low and trough will move south and east, taking areas of heavy rain to the coast. Sydney can expect showers late on Thursday and rain to develop on Friday, mainly in the morning. Brisbane should see rain increase on Friday. Melbourne is likely to get showers on Thursday and areas of rain on Friday. On Saturday, the low should move further south and east taking the bulk of the rainfall and storms off the east coast. However, it looks likely to be a fairly windy start to the weekend due to a tight pressure gradient. Victoria's Gippsland coast and eastern Tasmania can expect some heavy falls. Cloud, strong wind and/or rain will also bring a chilly day across the southeast. Showers should tend isolated and generally clear from the nation's southeast on Sunday as a high moves in from the west. Keep checking weatherzone.com.au for the latest updates on this rain event.
