Weather of Origin

Tim Hooton
State of Origin game one will kick-off tonight at 8pm at Melbourne's Etihad Stadium, where spectators will arrive under dry and mild weather conditions. The game is being played in Melbourne for the first time since 1997, to a sell-out crowd of 60,000. While rain is not expected around game time, the field will remain under great conditions thanks to Etihad Stadiums retractable roof. Etihad Stadium is the only football stadium in the Southern Hemisphere with a fully retractable roof, which is usually closed for night events especially in the cooler months. For the spectators travelling to the game, rain will hold off but winds will become gusty ahead of an approaching cold front. The northerly winds may gust as high as 60km/h this evening, but will draw a warmer airmass from the nation's interior. As the game starts, the mercury will hover in the mid to high teens, which is what Melbourne typically experiences as a daytime maximum during May. Supporters may be met with some light rain when they head home after the game as the cold front reaches the city. Winds will tend to a westerly direction as the front moves through, bringing cooling after the game. Blues and Maroons fans watching from Sydney and Brisbane will experience near identical temperatures of around 17 degrees. Sydney will remain dry tonight, although Brisbane may see a shower or two.
