Weather dampens grain results

Wednesday March 10, 2010 - 15:06 EDT

Warmer than average temperatures and below average rainfall has resulted in a disappointing grain yield in Western Australia's south.

The Department of Agriculture's seasonal update for March found last year's grain harvest yielded 11 million tonnes.

Wheat was the dominant crop, recording deliveries of 7.5 million tonnes.

Dry October weather meant the southern agricultural region's 2009 grain yield was disappointing with many crops just breaking even or producing a small profit.
