Bad weather hits south-west of state

Wednesday July 27, 2011 - 20:38 EST

Heavy rain is lashing the south west of the state as a strong cold front moves through.

The Weather Bureau says the front is bringing squally thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds.

Wind gusts of up to 125 kilometres an hour are predicted.

A severe weather warning has been issued for much of the south west.

The Fire and Emergency Services Authority is warning residents between Jurien Bay, north of Perth, and Bremer Bay on the South Coast to prepare for the possibility of flash flooding.

It has advised people to ensure pets and animals are in a safe area, and to move vehicles under cover.

FESA's Jo Weekes says its units are on alert.

"We're pretty well prepared," she said.

"We just put our units on alert and make sure we have the relevant equipment ready, as most of them are volunteers it can sometimes take a little while for them to be activated but yes they're all on standby and ready to go."

Main Roads reports traffic lights are out at the Safety Bay exit of the Kwinana Freeway.

Street lights in the area are also out and motorists are urged to be extra cautious when travelling through that area.

Lights are also out at the intersection of South West Highway and Pinjarra Roads.
