Heavy showers have continued over southwestern parts of Western Australia after yesterday saw some of the heaviest August rain in 100 years. In the 24 hours to 9am on Friday, Donnybrook received the heaviest August rainfall since 1907 with 95mm (as seen in Sam Brown's article - http://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/wet-days-for-southwest-wa/130223). The rain continued to fall into the night across the Southwest and Great Southern districts where another 50mm accumulated. A series of cold fronts are maintaining a steady flow of showers and thick cloud over southern parts of Western Australia today where 38 year old August rainfall records have been tumbling. Despite heavier showers falling elsewhere, parts of the Great Southern received the most significant rainfall for this time of the year. Brookton, Newdegate and Wagin all picked up their heaviest August daily totals since 1976 with the rain gauges at Brookton and Newdegate collecting 43mm, while Wagin saw 29mm. The state's capital received over 51mm to 9am today, surpassing all August totals since 1994. Similarly, Jandakot Airport, Swanbourne and Pearce all received the most substantial totals for the month of August since 1994 with 56mm, 51mm and 42mm respectively. Despite isolated showers continuing in the wake of these cold fronts tomorrow, today should be the last of the heavy showers in the southwest. Instead, the more significant rain will contract east over the Eucla and Esperance coasts with a moist southwesterly flow pushing onshore.
