 WA braces for Olwyn
Tropical Cyclone Olywn is barrelling towards the West Australian coast, with winds and rain set to increase. Barrow Island off the Pilbara Coast has already begun to feel the effects of this system with rain coming down thick and fast. Heavy downpours of more than 10mm in ten minutes has been recorded today, accompanied by winds 109km/h winds gusts. At Legendre Island, wind gusts of 96km/h have been clocked this afternoon. Tropical Cyclone Olwyn is forecast to jump from a catergory two to a category three system this evening. Olwyn should make landfall on Friday morning close to Exmouth. It is likely to weaken once as it comes off the warm Indian Ocean waters. As the system tracks down the western seaboard it will begin to disintegrate during Friday and Saturday. Heavy rain is likely for western parts of the Pilbara and Gascoyne. Exmouth and Onslow is likely to receive falls over 100-150mm on Friday, with widespread falls up to 50mm from Port Hedland to Denham. During Saturday, the southwest will see decent falls, likely to be in the region of 50mm from Kalbarri to Albany. By Sunday morning the low will move back into the Southern Indian Ocean, with the heavy falls and strong winds done and dusted.
