Victoria heat ends with sweaty night

Victoria heat ends with sweaty night
Records have tumbled after the extreme heat in Victoria unleashed one of the hottest nights in years for many. As Victorians watched the sun set on Monday, many would have hoped that the cool change due to arrive on Tuesday would put an abrupt end to the oppressive heat. The heat however had one last trick to play, a blistering night. When even after sunset, temperatures refused to drop below 40. Melbourne finally dropped below 40 around 8pm, was still above 35 after midnight and did not fall below 30.6 degrees all night. Melbourne's official minimum was around 24.2, set soon after 9am the previous morning. Right across Victoria, it was a hot one, with the official minimums delivered at 9am today, reading between 10 and 15 degrees above average. Notable hot spots were: - Stawell 27 degrees, warmest in at least 13 years. - Shepparton 29 degrees, second warmest since 1965. - Maryborough 29 degrees, officially their warmest minimum in 100 years. The hot day yesterday helped towards the hot night. Although crucially a blanket of cloud swept in too, helping insulate the land. Next up, parts of New South Wales will be reaching for the fans as the cloud drifts east tonight.
